For any address tracing assignment, it must first be established whether the client has what is known as a legitimate interest. This exists when the client’s need to obtain the address outweighs the protectable interests of the person sought – in particular their personal rights and their right to informational self-determination. For example: You do not know the new address of a former neighbour and wish to stay in touch. In such a case, there is no legitimate interest. The situation changes, however, if this neighbour borrowed tools from you for their move and – accidentally or deliberately – took them along. You would then incur property damage, which in most cases constitutes a sufficient reason for an investigation.
